Westfield Miranda Shopping Centre Car Park

Project Name:   Westfield Miranda Shopping Centre Car Park

Location: Sydney, Australia

Application: Concrete Hardstand

The Westfield Group is an Australian shopping centre group operating one of the world’s largest shopping centre portfolios. Westfield Miranda, has recently completed an AUD 435 million redevelopment which will act as a blueprint for future projects. The project involves the redevelopment and expansion of the existing shopping centre, including the addition of 650 bays of car parking.

The ground floor of the 12,000 m2 car park basement was originally designed as a 110 mm thick slab with steel mesh reinforcement. Tight budgets, a small construction window and site access issues resulted in Westfield flagging concerns with the design, specifically the cost to crane materials into the basement pit and the time it would take in man hours to correctly place steel mesh.

Designers eliminated these concerns by using a macro synthetic fibre reinforcement as an alternative for crack control mesh.

Outcomes:

  • Solved access issues at the build site
  • Removed steel mesh installation time
  • Improved crack control in the carpark slab
  • Eliminated the risk of corrosion
